Latin American Art

Description
This watercolor by Rivera is lively, with a detailed presence, and a strong symbolic figure. It is well balanced and not static, powerful and shows the strong energy of the artwork and the presence of the Mexican woman.

Standing in a stone walled path with mountainous and a lake in the distance behind her, a young girl pauses mid-step to look outward at her viewer, a wrapped basket of provisions and food in her left hand, a closely gathered bunch of bright yellow flowers in her right.

Her gaze is direct and ambiguous, it is simultaneously calm and watchful, yet the squared shoulders and front facing stance suggest confrontation, defiance, and strength, hallmark of Diego Rivera figures. Dressed in a simple Mexican peasant garb, from the sandals to the red skirt, augmented by the blue laced skirt, a mauve shawl rapped around her shoulders, she displays one bit of adornment, in her plain gold hoop, peeking out from her raven plaited hair.

All emphasis is placed on the figure’s features, classically reminiscent of Mayan other early Mesoamerican sculpture, with large direct eyes, a softly rounded curve of the jawline, and fully sensuous mouth.
